Stereological methods are used for obtaining quantitative information about three.dimensional structures based on measurements of a number of thin (two-dimensional) cuts through the structure, i.e. without having analyzed the entire three-dimensional structure. The cuts kan for example be made by the use of microscopy. CT- scanning og MR-scanning. By using stereological methods it is possible to determine parameters such as number, connectivity, 3D spatial dispersions, length, surfaces, volume, etc. of certain types of structures.
